PMRS update / August 6th, 2014 14:00 Second day of the 72 hours ceasefire For the second day in a row, the streets are too busy and crowded. People felt a bit safe and have come out; some to get much needed supplies, while others returned to where they used to live in order to check the damage incurred by their homes. Many people who are displaced at the moment may not be able to recognize their homes in light of the mass destruction. Those will continue to be displaced even after the end of the Israeli offensive and will have no place to go back to. And while Palestinians are hopeful that this lull will in the upcoming few hours be transformed into long term calm, indirect negotiations regarding an agreement between the Palestinian and Israeli sides have not yielded any progress yet. The Gaza Strip is one of the most densely populated areas in the world with more than 5000 people per square kilometer. Finding new homes for the displaced is going to be a difficult task. It is still not clear howthe ministry of works and housing is going to be able to accommodate the displaced especially in light of the huge numbers. Checking the damage to PMRS centers Our teams went to check on PMRS centers, and we found that three of our centers have sustained some damage. Ezbat Beit Hanoun sustained damage due to direct bombardment against the second floor and theft in the first floor. PMRS rehabilitation center in BaniSuhaila, east of Khan younes has also been damaged due to nearby bombardment. PMRS clinic in Abu Tauema due to direct bombardment against the second floor . PMRS teams in the field PMRS has so far mobilized a number of teams to visit shelters. They provide various services including medical checkups and treatment, dressing for the injured, rehabilitation services. The teams distribute first aid kits, hygiene kits, dressing kits, assistive devices, and community assistance of non-food items.

AuguAugust 3, 2014 / PMRS 13:00 On Saturday, August 2nd, Israel announced a unilateral withdrawal from the locations it has invaded in north, east and south of Gaza Strip. The Israeli army informed people who were displaced from their homes in the north, to return, except for the Beit Hanoun area. Later on, the Israeli army announced that this step does not mark the end of its military operation and that air strikes will go on, and today we’re witnessing an intensification of attacks by warplanes. Today, our team visited Ezbat Beit Hanoun clinic. On the way there, we could see no one in the streets. As we walked into the clinic, we found out that it had sustained so much damage, with a shell hitting the first floor and another hitting the roof. Walls have been broken, windows fell and instruments are damaged. The clinic is not going to be operative until all this damaged is repaired. PMRS provides services The case of Sally Saqer, 20 years old Sally Naim Saqer, 20 year old young woman, from Alshate’a refugee camp, suffers from cerebral palsy since birth. She was staying at Mabarat Falastin society for rehabilitation of people with disability. On Saturday, July 12th, Israeli forces bombed the rehabilitation center and the word was that everyone in there was killed. However, Sally had survived sustaining severe injury. After the bombing, Sally was found in the front yard of the organization, suffering severe burns to 70% of her body, fractures to her right thy, left arm, and the skull. Sally was admitted to the intensive care unit at al-Shifa hospital and was there for two days, but then she was released as much more serious cases had to be admitted and there was no room at the hospital. Sally’s mother has suffered a lot as there was no service provided to her daughter. The Palestinian Medical Relief Society team started to provide dressing services to Sally stating on Friday August 1st, and continue to visit her every day.

Conferenza Stampa del Ministero della Salute di Gaza- Palestina 3 agosto 2014 Kuwait Maternity Hospital di Rafah non è in grado di far fronte alle decine di morti e feriti Ministero della Salute di Gaza informa che a Rafah numerosi civili sono stati uccisi durante gli attacchi israeliani e oggi 10 civili sono stati assassinati e oltre 30 sono rimasti feriti in un altro attacco contro una scuola dell’UNRWA, la scuola media Anas Ibn Malik, dove avevano trovato rifugio migliaia di sfollati. Un gruppo di donne, bambini e anziani erano seduti contro il muro d’ingresso della scuola in cerca di riparo dal sole, quando sono stati colpiti. Questo atroce attacco segue il bombardamento, sempre a Rafah , contro la casa delle famiglie Ghoul e Abu Jazzar che ha causato 18 morti e decine di feriti; arrivano così a 118 i civili deceduti oggi a Gaza. Attacchi missilistici e di mortaio continuano a Rafah, mettendo in enorme difficoltà l’operatività del Kuwait Maternity Hospital che ha 20 posti letto, ma è traboccante di morti e feriti. Ci sono 30 corpi stesi sul pavimento della clinica odontoiatrica, e i corpi di bambini sistemati nei frigoriferi per alimenti perché non c’è l’obitorio e strutture adatte per conservare i corpi. I corpi dei bambini nei frigoriferi per alimenti . Ad altri corpi è stato possibile dare sepoltura nel cimitero occidentale, mentre il cimitero orientale è ancora inaccessibili a causa dei continui attacchi israeliani.. “Abbiamo un disperato bisogno di sangue, non ne abbiamo più abbastanza per le trasfusioni”, ha detto Fatma Abu Musa, un tecnico di laboratorio in Kuwait Hospital. “Abbiamo solo due sale operatorie, cui di una per interventi chirurgici minori. Nell’altra sala operatoria per interventi chirurgici maggiori si interviene, contemporaneamente, sullo stesso tavolo operatorio, su due diversi pazienti, con intestini e altre parti di organi esposte. E ‘impossibile prendersi cura di tutti i feriti ” Kuwait Hospital ha spostato molti feriti al Red Crescent Maternity Hospital che è nelle vicinanze, ed è leggermente più grande, ma altrettanto inadeguato per far fronte alle necessità di intervento che i feriti richiedono. Nelle ultime settimane il Ministero della Salute di Gaza ha fatto numerose chiamate alla Comunità Internazionale per chiedere sostegno e assistenza, chiamate che sono in gran parte rimaste senza risposta. Vi imploriamo affinchè prendiate azioni concrete volte a fermare la strage israeliana di migliaia di civili palestinesi. Chiediamo in nome dell’umanità che la Comunità Internazionale si attivi per: 1. Interrompere immediatamente i crimini di guerra israeliani e far cessare gli attacchi contro la popolazione civile di Gaza; 2 Stabilire percorsi sicuri per i feriti da trasportare da Rafah in altri ospedali della striscia di Gaza per assicurare loro i trattamenti sanitari necessari: 3. Gaza / PMRS August 2nd, 2014 13:00 After twenty seven days of ongoing Israeli offensive against Gaza, the situation has become unbearable. Close to half a million people (25% of Gaza strip population) are now displaced and are living either in schools, hospitals, with relatives or even in the streets. They don’t have life’s minimum basic necessities. Clean water has become so hard to obtain in light of the complete absence of electricity, which is preventing pumping water to people’s houses. Gaza’s municipalities have also warned of an imminent environmental catastrophe if the situation does not improve soon as all water treatment plants would shut off and stop operating. The Israeli attacks against health facilities are unprecedented. A new Israeli massacre that was committed against civilians in Rafah on Friday left more than sixty people dead in that city alone and hundreds of others wounded. The one and only hospital working in Rafah, Abu Yousef Alnajjar hospital, was ordered by the Israeli army to evacuate. Health officials spoke of having to put dead bodies in vegetable coolers, while the wounded were left to bleed in the street as there was no room for them to be treated. The death toll continues to rise. As of today, 1650 people have been killed and nearly 9000 injured.

Comunicato stampa Ministero della Salute Gaza – Palestina 31 luglio 2014 Interventi chirurgici sanitari sul pavimento. Negli ospedali di Gaza si sta operando in condizioni impossibili, con interventi chirurgici svolti sul pavimento a causa dell’arrivo contemporaneo di numerosi feriti dai massacri del parco giochi di Shati Camp, della scuola UNRWA e del mercato Shujeiyah. La mancanza di spazio costringe i medici ad intervenire contemporaneamente su due pazienti, mentre altri ricevono le prime cure, anche chirurgiche, nei corridoi. Anche i letti sono insufficiente davanti a questa emergenza e i medici sono costretti a lavorare in condizioni precarie e complicate con i pazienti ancora in barella e sul pavimento. Non vi è più posto alla Shifa Hospital nel centro intensivo/ rianimazione per i pazienti post-operati per mancanza di posti letto e anche il reparto di chirurgia ha esaurito i letti. In alcuni casi i pazienti vengono inviati al reparto di maternità e di medicina interna o in altri ospedali della striscia che sono anch’essi in condizioni organizzative disperate. 30 pazienti potrebbero essere dimessi, ma non hanno una casa o un luogo dove andare . I 30 posti letto liberati sono disperatamente necessari per dare sistemazione ad altrettanti feriti che giacciono sui materassi nei corridoi. La situazione si è talmente aggravata che i pazienti stanno addirittura condividendo il letto, mentre altri pazienti sono stati dismessi prematuramente. In molti casi i feriti che arrivano all’ospedale non vengono registrati immediatamente perché la condizione di estrema emergenza nella quale si è chiamati ad operare, l’elevato arrivo contemporaneo di feriti, non permette una regolare registrazione. Questa non è certamente la situazione ideale nella quale si deve operare negli ospedali Tutte queste condizioni di operare portano al disastro. Il controllo delle infezioni è quasi impossibile, e le complicanze post-operatorie, tra cui la morte purtroppo saranno inevitabili. La chirurgia nei corridoi Parecchi decessi si stanno verificando per la mancanza di un trattamento tempestivo, in quanto il numero di pazienti che necessitano di assistenza ha superato di gran lunga la capacità di intervento e operativa del personale medico a disposizione. Si stima che ci sia un deficit circa del 50% del fabbisogno di staff medico e paramedico e questa situazione non permette adeguati e tempestivi interventi con il risultato che i pazienti ricevono cure inadeguate ed altri non ne ricevono alcuno.. Tutto lo staff medico attualmente in forza è sommerso dalle emergenze, con strutture e macchinari insufficienti , chiamato a svolgere il loro dovere 24 ore su 24 e in tanti lavorano senza retribuzione. Tutti i chirurghi e il personale paramedico sono stati richiamati, per cercare di coprire le carenze e le necessita degli operatori sanitari. I medici, gli infermieri, gli addetti al primo soccorso stanno operando in condizioni di grave logoramento psico-fisico a causa di mancanza di riposo, per l’orrore alla visione delle tremende ferite causate dagli attacchi, per la carenza di materiali sanitari , ma anche per il costante timore per l’incolumità delle loro famiglie e la paura di attacchi contro gli ospedali, che sono diventati obiettivi dei bombardamenti israeliani. Il Ministero della Salute di Gaza richiede che : 1. ONU, Croce Rossa Internazione e ONG internazionali forniscano urgentemente luoghi sicuri e con garanzie igieniche dove poter ricoverare i pazienti dismessi; dare questa soluzione è estremamente utile anche al fine di liberare posti letti negli ospedali, di cui vi è disperato bisogno; 2 i valichi vengano aperti immediatamente per consentire l’ingresso ai soccorsi necessari, quali equipe mediche per alleviare lo staff medico e paramedico oramai esausto e le attrezzature sanitarie necessarie per poter operare ed intervenire in maniera adeguata. 3. La Comunità Internazionale intraprenda azioni immediate e concrete nel denunciare i crimini di guerra israeliani contro la popolazione civile della striscia di Gaza. tradotto g.b.
